UPTE Goes Green: making environmental awareness a priority at the 19^th Annual UPTE-CWA Local 9119 Convention

The 19^th annual UPTE convention will take place Friday, October 24 through Sunday, October 26, 2008. The meetings will be held at the Westin San Francisco Airport, which is located at
1 Old Bayshore Highway, Millbrae, CA. Click here for directions.

UPTE’s annual convention is the meeting of the highest body of UPTE. All members are invited to attend and help to chart the course of UPTE for the coming year. If you want to attend as an official delegate from your campus local, please contact your local to find out about the election process and schedule.

This is an exciting year for UPTE. Major discussion items will include:
            Mobilizing for contract fights
            UC healthcare reform
            Organizing for representation for administrative professionals

The agenda will not be final until shortly before the convention begins, but following is a description of what you can expect to experience:

Friday 10 am – 12 noon:
Workshops on a variety of subjects of interest to UPTE members, including stewarding, diversity in the union, pensions, healthcare reform, legislative and political action, and health and safety.

Friday 12 noon – 2 pm:
Solidarity action (picketing, leafleting, precinct-walking) for a current labor and/or political issue

Friday 2 pm – 5 pm:
More workshops!

Friday dinner:
At local restaurants

Saturday 10 am – 5 pm:
Reports on activities from the past year:

Organizing
Membership
Bargaining
Mobilizing

Legislative and political
Discussion of resolutions on a wide variety of internal union and external issues
Discussion of proposed constitutional amendments that guide our internal structure
Nominations for trustee position
Solidarity Labor Chorus performance

Saturday evening:
Banquet dinner
Fundraising BINGO game for the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation (UPTE-CWA’s charity of choice) – always a highlight of the convention!

Sunday 9 am – 3 pm:
Unit caucuses (RX/TX, HX, 99, DOE Labs)
Trustee election
Continuation of discussions from the previous day (particularly resolutions and constitutional amendments)
Review plans for the next year
Adjourn, return home, and organize!
